August 2008 Entries
One rum down, three more to go in my quest to complete the entire line of rums from Celebration Distillation. I had planned to do the entire line before the end of August, but that's beginning to look a tad unlikely. So good news for the New Orleans-o-philes: the August Spotlight will continue to shine on through the first week of September! Today I'm checking off Old New Orleans Amber Rum.
Made using the same 500 gallon, small-batch process as used for all Old New Orleans Rums, the Amber is a blend of rums aged at least 3 years. It's bottled...

My reputation as a Crushing Crusher of Rum precedes me. I'm not sure what that even means, but then again I think I'm the one who coined the phrase, so I guess it doesnt' really matter.
On Monday, August 25, the Mixoloseum will be hosting a chat focused on my favorite libation and yours, rum. The chat begins at 9 pm EDT (6 pm Pacific Dood Time), and will include such rum luminaries as Scott Steeve's of Scottes' Rum Pages, Rick of Kaiser Penguin, Blair Reynolds (aka Trader Tiki), Phil Gomes of Cachacagora, and yours truly, the one and only RumDood.
According...

We all make mistakes, and anyone who knows me personally will tell you that I make enough for all of us. This is just a quick mea culpa on the Old New Orleans Crystal Rum review that I posted yesterday. During my distillery tour I had erroneously written down that the Cyrstal rum was barreled at 157 proof, and stated so in my review. Cassidy, Brand Ambassador for Old New Orleans Rum, contacted me this morning and corrected me. The rum is not barreled aged at all, but pulled from the still, blended, flavored, and then bottled. I've corrected the...

As you and I continue our August Spotlight on Old New Orleans Rum, we come to the first product in their line of offerings, the Old New Orleans Crystal Rum. I say first because I have to start somewhere; and after the distillery tour, why not start with the most basic of any company's rum: their white / blanco / crystal / plantinum / claro / blanc...you get the idea.
The crystal rum is created by distilling blackstrap molasses produced from Louisiana sugar cane. Out of the still, the rum is blended and combined with the of a few drops of...

Is it really time for MxMo again? Really? Didn't we just do this like 2 weeks ago? I could have sworn I just finished writing about Hurricanes and why Pat O'Brien's is not where to get them. Well, too soon or not, it's time for another monthly foray into my pretend-life as a mixologist.
This month's round-up is being hosted by Save The Drinkers, who chose to give us a great deal of latitude on the topic of Local Flavors:
The idea is to post one of two types of drinks:
Option 1: Gather ingredients that are representative of the culture/geography/tackiness of...

During Tales of the Cocktail this year, I decided to make a trip down to see Celebration Distillation – home of Old New Orleans Rum. I wanted to get an inside look at how this small American distillery was producing a unique collection of rums that they claim captures the essence of the Crescent City in a bottle.
I spent the morning putting together some notes, and then grabbed a taxi from the Hotel Monteleone to the distillery. The two buildings are only about 3.5 miles apart, but I didn't want to end up lost and figured a cab would be...
