September 2008 Entries
Hundreds of thousands of people traveled to Bavaria last week for the opening ceremonies of what is perhaps Germany's most famous celebration: Oktoberfest. While I wasn't able to make it to Munich for the festival this year (you win AGAIN, Responsibility!), I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon wending my way through an excellent collection of German beers, courtesy of Learn About Wine's Sunday School course on beer, its history, and its traditions in Germany.
I'll go ahead and just say that I realize that beer doesn't really fit in to my usual shtick here, but rum alone will not...

At long last we come to the tearful ending of our journey through the Old New Orleans Rums. Having started with the Crystal, spent time with the Amber, and rejoiced in Cajun Spiced's embodiment of the holidays, it is now time to discuss the final offering from Celebration Distillation: Old New Orleans 10 Year Old Rum.
The story of this rum is a story of perseverance and rebirth, just like the city that it calls home. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the staff of Celebration Distillation returned to their distillery to find it had flooded. The water had reached heights...

This isn't a rum-focused post, but since I'm spending so much of my formerly free time at the Mixoloseum Virtual Bar (or whatever Gabe is calling the chat room that is rapidly devouring my life), I figured I owed it a plug for the new weekly event: Thursday Night Drink Night.
Join a collection of rag-tag cocktailians as they discuss and invent new drinks ON THE FLY, and then test them out live. That's right, everyone gets a chance (or 2 or 5) to rummage through their bar and come up with a brand new drink and have it tried out...

Another month has come and gone, and once again I find myself staring at my calendar with “Write MxMo Entry” staring back at me. The kind folks over Bibulo.us have chosen this month’s theme to be 19th Century Cocktails. That being the case, I’ve chosen to write about the Rum Swizzle.
While I know the topic of 19th Century Cocktails sent shivers of delight up the spines of some of my fellow bloggers (*cough* Darcy *cough*), for me it meant that I’d actually have to do some research. I had originally thought I’d just crack open my copy of Imbibe! and...

The Old New Orleans Crystal and Amber reviews are in the can. As we enter month two of my one-month focus on Old New Orleans Rum, we move on to their third offering: Old New Orleans Cajun Spice Rum.
Spiced rum (often referred to as just “spice” in the Islands) is one of the more common spirits for introducing (American) people to molasses-based spirits. The well-known brand with the pirate mascot in the red coat is the second largest brand of spirits sold in the United States by volume. That’s a lot of spiced rum and cokes.
In the Caribbean it’s...

I'm a little tardy in posting this, but for those of you who couldn't make it to the rum chat at Mixoloseum last week, the transcript has been edited, charcoal filtered, and rendered fit for human consumption. You can check it out at the Mixoloseum Blog. Thanks to Gabe for putting that together, it was a lot of fun, and I hope I haven't chatted myself out of being invited back for another session some time soon.
