Working With Port: Trinidad Sand

Sandeman Port was the most recent sponsor of the Mixoloseum's Thursday Drink Night.  On December 18th a collection of cocktail bloggers, bartenders, and other cocktail enthusiasts signed in to the Mixoloseum's Bar and spent the evening mixing cocktails with a rarely-used ingredient: port. Port, of course, is a Portugese fortified wine that is often served as a dessert wine.  Typically one would drink it on its own.  I know that when an excellent glass of rum isn't an option after dinner, I'll often opt for a nice 20 year old Tawney Port.  This being said, it's not unheard of for port...

MxMo Addendum: New York Rooster

OK, in my Mixology Monday: Spice! post I mentioned that I had been working on a spicy drink recipe using sriracha sauce sort of on a dare.  Well it wasn't ready for that post, and maybe it isn't even really ready now, but after some additional tinkerage tonight, I have something that I'm enjoying quite a bit tonight. A week or so ago, my fondness for sriracha sauce came up in conversation with a fairly new acquaintence.  It was suggested - most likely in jest - that I should try to come up with a cocktail that used it if I...

Mixology Monday: Spice!

"The time has come," the Dood did say, "to talk of many things. Of rums and spice and MxMo posts - of muddlers and slings!" Once again Mixology Monday has crept upon us. This month's installment (round THIRTY FOUR) is being hosted by Craig Herman at Tiki Drinks & Indigo Firmaments. Craig, being something of a fan of tiki, and this being the season of spiced cakes, punches, and nogs, it's not much of a surprise to find that our topic for this month is spice. I had originally planned on submitting two drinks this month, a holiday drink that I've discussed...

Rum Review: Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva

Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva is billed as being the "Spirit of Cuba."  The frequent gold medal-winning rum has a long and storied past that stretches back to 19th Century Spain and Cuba. Founded in 1872, the Matusalem company has been made by the same family for generations.  The company originally took root in Santiago de Cuba, where it eventually became one of the most successful Cuban rum producers.  Of course, in 1959, Castro's little revolution upset the apple cart, and Matusalem was forced to leave Cuba for the Dominican Republic.  The company currently produces its rum in the city of San...

Leblon Cachaca: The Sao Paulo Iced Tea

A few weeks ago Leblon Cachaca was the first-ever sponsor for the Mixoloseum's Thursday Drink Night event.  I mentioned just before the event that Gabriel from CocktailNerd.com and I were going to be taking part in this event live from Trader Vic's in Las Vegas, courtesy of our new sponsors.  I've already covered the Vic's part of the evening over at the Mixoloseum blog, and heartily recommend you go check it out. Gabe and I spent a lot of time making drinks with the bartenders at Vic's.  It was a lot of fun.  While we created a few drinks that I...

Rum Review: Ron Atlantico Private Cask

One of the things I really love about running this site is that I sometimes I get to be a little ahead of the curve as new rums come to market.  You may not have heard of Ron Atlantico yet, but you should expect to start hearing about it a lot.  One of the newest kids on the block when it comes to premium rums, Ron Atlantico comes to market with an impressive arsenal of experience and craftsmanship. I first got to try Ron Atlantico Private Cask in New Orleans during Tales of the Cocktail and the Ministry of Rum Tasting...
